Healing Trauma through Somatic Experiencing

What is Somatic Experiencing?

A different kind of healing — one that begins in the body.

“Trauma is not what happens to you. It’s what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.”
— Dr. Gabor Maté

If you’ve tried talk therapy, self-help, or sheer willpower and still feel stuck in the same patterns — you’re not alone. Many people come to Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) after years of trying to understand their trauma, but not fully feeling free from it.

That’s because trauma isn’t just held in the mind — it’s held in the body.

Somatic Experiencing is a body-based approach to healing trauma and chronic stress. It works by helping your nervous system gently release the stored tension and overwhelm that may still be affecting how you feel, how you react, and how you move through life.

This isn’t about reliving the past. It’s about finally giving your body the time, space, and support it didn’t have when the trauma occurred.

  • In overwhelming moments, our bodies automatically respond — we fight, flee, freeze, or fawn. These responses are brilliant adaptations that keep us safe. But when they get stuck in the nervous system, they can show up as anxiety, tension, emotional reactivity, disconnection, people-pleasing, or a chronic sense of being on edge.

Often, these patterns linger for years — not because something is wrong with you, but because your body never had the chance to fully complete what it started.

  • Talk therapy can bring helpful insight — but insight alone doesn’t always bring relief. SE goes deeper, by involving the body in the healing process.

We slow things down and begin to gently track the body’s natural language — sensations, impulses, breath, movement — in a way that allows the nervous system to unwind old survival responses, without being overwhelmed. There’s no need to push, analyze, or even explain everything. Healing happens in the present moment, one safe step at a time.

As the body feels safer, more regulated, and more grounded, the mind often follows.

  • If you find yourself saying:

    • “I understand where this comes from, but I still can’t change it.”

    • “I’ve done so much work, but I’m still anxious / disconnected / exhausted.”

    • “I don’t know why I react this way — I just do.”

Then Somatic Experiencing may be exactly what your system has been waiting for.

This work is especially supportive for those healing from:

    • Childhood trauma or emotional neglect

    • Shock trauma/crisis

    • Chronic stress, burnout, or overwhelm

    • Medical trauma or accidents

    • Anxiety, shutdown, or patterns of fawning/people-pleasing

    • A general sense of being “off,” disconnected, or stuck in survival mode

This work is compassionate. It’s powerful. And it works.

Somatic Experiencing honors your body’s wisdom and gives you the space to come home to yourself — gently, respectfully, and at your own pace.

Over time, you may notice more ease, better boundaries, deeper self-trust, and a growing sense of aliveness and connection. These shifts are real — and they begin in the body.
